Is my straight garden path really bad for my feng shui?

Question

I have been told that my front garden path is straight and therefore bad for my feng shui. Is that true?

Answer

There tends to be a rather widespread myth within some feng shui opinion that everything must be curved to “be good feng shui”. The reason is that chi moves faster in straight lines and sometimes fast chi can be seen as harmful. However, given the scale of most typical British front gardens, this concern is more theoretical than real.

The first thing to think about is that a space must be able to properly fulfil its intended funtion. For the majority of british homes, the most important thing about a garden path is to get from the road to the door with minimum of fuss and without getting muddy feet: straight is perfectly fine.

Curves have their place, as do straight lines. Neither is inherently good or bad.

Why does Yang go down and Yin go up?

Question

I heard that yang energy is associated with a downward direction and yin with upward. This seems illogical given the usual interpretation of yang being positive and yin being negative.

Answer

The definition between yin and yang depends on the context in which we are looking.

On the one hand, heaven is yang and the earth is yin. Yang chi coming from the heavens must come down, whereas yin chi coming from the earth must come up.

On the other hand of course the top of a hill would usually be considered to be more yang than the adjoining valley.

We need to adjust our view depending on the situation we are trying to understand.

Please be aware that I am only able to answer very general questions via this web page.

Evaluation of floor plans, colour schemes, plans for extensions, alterations or building work are not within the scope of this Q&A page. I would of course be happy to consider offering help in these areas on a consulting basis.

How long does feng shui take to work

Question

How long does it take for feng shui to work?

Answer

The feng shui of a property is an ongoing feature: its physical form influences the lives of those who live within it. If we make deliberate changes to the form of a place to help improve our lot in life, then sometimes results can seem to manifest almost immediately, and sometimes they take much longer.

Feng shui supports our own efforts to achieve our goals. The more fully we commit to applying a number of feng shui recommended changes, the more likely we are to see the result we want to see.

How can feng shui make you wealthy?

Question

Lots of feng shui books say it can make me wealthy, but how does that work? I have tried lots of things but I am still not wealthy.

Answer

Improving your feng shui can support you better in your own efforts to improve your wealth: it is unlikely to simply make you wealthy on its own. Feng shui works with the background energies or “chi” that drive the world we live in.┬áThe better the quality and quantity of chi that you can absorb, the better your own energy will be, and the better you will be able to achieve your own ambitions in the world.

To properly use feng shui, there needs to be an understanding of the chi of your home and how it can be improved. This kind of evaluation cannot come from a book, but only from a feng shui consultant who will be able to see how you can best improve your own particular situation.

What happens if I don’t do what you say?

Question

What happens if I don’t do what you say.

Answer

The same as what would happen if you go and see your Doctor, and then don’t take the pills you are given. It is of course entirely up to you whether you choose to follow any advice or suggestions I give you. One thing to bear in mind however, is the people who get the most out of a feng shui consultation are those who follow the guidance of the consultant.

Do we need to stand in a circle and hold hands?

Question

If you come to do a feng shui consultation at our company, will we need to stand in a circle and hold hands. That’s what happened in my friends company and they all felt very silly.

Answer

No, absolutely not. This kind of ritual plays no part in my feng shui consulting style. If I were to visit your company, I would appear to be like any other kind of surveyor or inspector if anyone cared to look.

Why are dried flowers bad for feng shui?

Question

Why are dried flowers bad for feng shui?

Answer

Because they are dead! We live in the land of the living and it is better to surround ourselves with living things.

My husband does not close his drawers

Question

My husband will not close his drawers. What can I do?

Answer

From the feng shui perspective, don’t worry about it: such a small thing is unlikely to have much of an impact of the feng shui of your home.

Of course you may wish to work something out with your husband just for the sake of keeping a tidier space around you.

I am a rabbit, what does that mean?

Question

I have been told that I am a rabbit, what does that mean?

Answer

On its own it means very little indeed. It’s a bit like asking what the letter “Q” means. On its own it doesn’t mean much at all. It needs to be put into context of words and sentences before it starts to mean anything. It is the same with the rabbit. The rabbit, along with eleven other animals, is just a tiny part of a much bigger picture that comes from the Four Pillars system of Chinese astrology.
